Millions of steam users fell over backwards at the announcement from GameStop that “The upcoming EA title Battlefield 3 will be sold as a download through GameStop, but not through Steam.”This is because ““Given Steam’s dominance – and insistence on users downloading a Steam client application – publishers are likely to be receptive to a competitive alternative,” the Baird report read”It seems as if EA has gamers on a stranglehold. If you want to play, what appears to be, one of the best games in the last few years, then you’re going to have to do it their way – through Origin. How gamers will react to this is yet to be seen, but one thing is for certain. If sales don’t go as expected you’ll be sure to see BF3 on steam soon. Many online forums have already have threads about boycotting Origin because of EA’s insistance on using it. Our guess here is that those threats will be short lived and that Origin will in fact increase it’s market share just as EA wanted. Whether they can do this without lowering their overall sales is yet to be seen. Whether it’s on Steam, Origin, or whatever it is we can’t wait!
