What Monitor is Best for Gaming? – 2011 Guide

Just like any piece of computer hardware a good gaming monitor is crucial to your gaming performance.  A poor gaming monitor can lead to ghosting, eye strain/damage, and a less enjoyable atmosphere.  It’s also extremely important to consider the size of monitor you want.  A monitor that is too large can  make it difficult for you to see the entire screen at one time, leading to ineffective game play.  Productivity501.com mentions that it’s better to use a monitor right around 24 inches for maximum productivity.  A monitor smaller or larger than 24 inches can often have a negative effect.

Monitor Term Guide

Response Time

Other important considerations include response time.  Response time is basically the time it takes for a pixel to go out to the darkest dark and then back again to the whitest white.  A good gaming monitor will have a response time of better than 3ms.  A monitor with 5ms or more can cause eye strain and damage after long hours of gaming.  Other negative effects from a having a low response time include ghosted images while gaming.

Contrast Ratio

For a brilliant picture consider your monitors contrast ratio.  It can be a bit tricky to try and compare contrast ratios between monitors.  If one of the specifications is DCR or Dynamic contrast ratio, then that is a figure that you can compare across brand names.  A good Contrast Ratio will allow for brighter colors and a better gaming experience.

LED or LCD?

LED monitors are more energy efficient and essentially are LCD monitors which have LED lights for backlighting.  LED monitors don’t use mercury in building so they are more environmentally friendly.  Some gamers have complained that LED monitors have “backlight” bleeding although from our experience this is from poor quality materials and manufacturers rather than LED specific.

Inputs

Most computer monitors now include a DVI input but some gamers may want an HDMI input for easy audio and video connectivity.  Older computers may only have a RGA input in the back (not a problem for most gamers who update their video card every 12-24 months).

Tilt and Swivel

Consider the tilt and swivel options of your monitor.  If you like to see your monitor at a certain angle, then be sure that the stand is adjustable to your liking.
